Mugshots of Released Inmates
A mugshot, or booking photo, is part of the booking record when the agency creates and maintains it. For Shelby County Jail, the official public records are the live inmate listing and the Sheriff's prisoner intake and release records. The monthly reports do not include photos, but they provide the book ID, name, release date/time, charges, and release-code context needed to ask the Sheriff's Office for the correct booking record.
Alabama's sheriff prisoner-book statute, Code of Alabama Section 36-22-8, requires the sheriff to keep a public office record for prisoners received into the county jail, including identifying description, charge, commitment information, and release information. Alabama's general public-records law supports inspection and copying of public writings subject to exceptions. Photo availability can still be limited by agency practice, juvenile or Youthful Offender restrictions, active-case concerns, sealed or expunged records, and records outside the agency's custody.
Where a Released Shelby County Inmate's Mugshot Appears
Use official channels before any outside copy. A photo that appears on a non-government site may be stale, incomplete, or disconnected from later release, dismissal, expungement, or supervision records.

The Sheriff Roster and Mobile App
The Shelby County inmate listing is the first local place to check for a booking photo. Current roster entries show image behavior, and the source page directs users to click an inmate name to view the picture. The Shelby County Sheriff (AL) mobile app listing says the app can display inmate listings and sex offenders and provide push notifications for public-safety updates and press releases. Treat the app as a convenience channel for phone access, not as a separate official photo archive. If the photo is not available through the public listing or app, use a records request rather than a commercial mugshot site.
Requesting a Booking Photo
When the public listing no longer shows a person or does not expose a usable image, request the booking photo or booking record from the agency that created it. For a Shelby County Jail booking, that is the Shelby County Sheriff's Office or Jail Division. The monthly report can help target the request even though the PDF itself does not include mugshots.
- Search the live release view or the monthly Intake & Release Reports for the correct person.
- Record the full name, inmate number or book ID, booking date, approximate release date or month, charge information, and any case number available from court records.
- Contact the Jail Division at 205-670-6066 or the Sheriff's Office at 205-670-6000 and ask for the booking photo or booking record maintained by the sheriff.
- If the issue is court disposition, dismissal, sentence completion, or expungement, use Shelby Circuit Clerk and Alacourt rather than asking the jail to interpret the court file.

Third-Party Sites and News Sources
Local news may publish a booking photo in a specific public-interest case, and third-party sites may mirror jail or arrest data. Those sources are not official release records. They may omit the later release date, court disposition, expungement activity, supervision status, or transfer to another agency. They also may continue displaying copied information after the official record has changed.
This site does not endorse commercial mugshot galleries, pay-to-remove services, or data brokers. If a third-party copy is wrong or harmful, separate that issue from the official record. Correcting or limiting an official Shelby record generally requires the Sheriff's Office, court file, expungement process, or the agency that maintains the source record. Removing a private copy does not change the jail, court, ADOC, ABPP, VNS, or registry record.
Removing a Mugshot and the Effect of Expungement
Shelby's expungement page provides the local mechanics for court-record relief. It says the CR-65 petition form is available through Alacourt eForms, one offense per petition must be filed, the administrative filing fee is $500 per filing, an official certified criminal record from ACJIC must be attached, and certified Shelby District or Circuit Court records cost $10 per charge/count. Petitions and documents must be paper-filed in the Circuit Clerk's office.
Expungement or sealing can affect what remains publicly available, but it does not make every public or private copy vanish automatically. If an official booking photo should no longer be public because of sealing, expungement, juvenile status, Youthful Offender restrictions, or another legal limit, contact the agency maintaining that record and provide the order or case information. The research reviewed for this project did not verify a specific Alabama anti-pay-to-remove mugshot statute, so no page should promise a statutory takedown remedy that was not sourced.

County Photo or State Photo
A Shelby County Jail mugshot and an ADOC state-custody photo are different records. If the person was booked into the Shelby County Jail at 380 McDow Road, start with the Sheriff's listing, monthly reports, and records staff. If the person was transferred to ADOC or housed at the Alabama Therapeutic Education Facility, use ADOC while the person is currently incarcerated and VNS/ABPP/court records for release and supervision context.
ADOC's public inmate search says it contains currently incarcerated inmates and does not provide historical data online. That means a missing ADOC result is not proof that no state record or photo ever existed. It may mean the person was released from ADOC, was never in ADOC custody, is under a restricted status, or needs a public-record request rather than an online search.
